Puppy Head Start FAQs

Q: May I bring another family member to watch this class? Will they be able to learn also?

ANSWER: Yes, your interested family members will be able to participate in the puppy class, as you learn how to train your dog.  We want all family members to be on the same page and use the same communication training with the dog… that is the right and fair thing to do.

Q: What do I need to do before coming to class?

ANSWER:  1) Bring along your application, as well as a copy of your puppy’s vaccination records.  2) Bring your dog and an open mind to learn new ways of relating effectively with your dog.

Q: Where is Applewoods located? What do I do when I arrive on the first class?

ANSWER: Applewoods is located at 804 Lafayette Ave in Laurel, MD. Click here for the map and directions.  We have parking on the outside of the double gates for 8 cars only so my car/my assistant’s car will be parked on the inside of the gates.  When you arrive, please keep your dog on its leash and do not allow it to approach another students’ dog.  This is a safety precaution for everyone.

An Applewoods staff will greet you through the double gates and give you directions/instructions on coming inside the double gates one student/dog at a time ONLY.  Please follow their instructions carefully as this is a 100-year old schoolhouse so we have to treat it gently.

Q: What will I need to bring?

ANSWER:  If you have a collar, bring that along when you bring your puppy for the initial Puppy Headstart Class.  We will supply you with a puppy collar,   a Learning String and a Longe Line.  You will need a 6’ leather leash, but please do NOT go buy one.  We have them for sale at Applewoods for $ 25 and the quality/pricing is better than you can get anywhere else.  Our leashes are made for Applewoods specifically.

Q: What if the weather is bad?

ANSWER: When Prince Georges County schools close for activities, we are closed.  If you have doubts about meeting, you can find specific notice on the Puppy Blog for the class.  If it rains, we meet inside.

Q: What can I expect during the initial Puppy Consultation class?

ANSWER: The beginnings of a transformation in your dog.  Your dog will learn to think, take responsibility for its behavior and to trust you.  The exercises (games) we provide to you to do with your puppy lays the foundation for trust.  You will be teaching your dog the following:

  • Your puppy will know clearly you are the boss and they are not.
  • Your puppy will learn to be quiet at your left side while you do other things.
  • Your puppy will receive games to play at home
  • You and your puppy will have homework called Socialization as a Form of Training.
  • You and your family will have the opportunity to have basic puppy raising questions like “What Words to Use?”,  “How to potty train?”, “Rules for the house?” and “Who should do what, when?” You will learn how to set your puppy up for success in your home and begin the puppy foundation training for obedience.

Q: What can I expect during the following weeks of Puppy Socialization classes?

ANSWER: You will learn how to teach your puppy:

  • Appropriate good manners when meeting other dogs.
  • To stand for basic grooming practices.
  • To pay attention to you out on a walk.
  • Random Recall (Come).
  • Load/unload your puppy from a car.
  • Sit
  • Down.
  • Go to a “place” of your choosing and stay there.
  • You will learn how to set your puppy up for success in public places.

Q: What can I do between now and when class begins?

ANSWER: Work on housebreaking and general manners like sitting before eating, sitting at the door before going outside.  Puppy Headstart Class is the beginning of “school” with lots more to come.

Q: How will I know what to do/when?

ANSWER: You will be shown exactly what to do during class and have time to practice.  At all times, you will have your Instructor’s email, as well as the ability to call Applewoods Dog Training for any assistance or immediate concerns.  We are here to help you succeed in training your dog to be well-mannered, well-behaved and obedient.

Q: What is the dress code? What should I wear?

ANSWER: We recommend long pants (with belt loops best) and closed shoe like a running shoe.   No exceptions for safety reasons.

Q: What is your cancellation/refund policy?

ANSWER: Should you decide Applewoods is not the right place for you, after the first class, your refund is 2/3 of the class cost, minus the cost of training materials, and minus a handling fee of $35. Thereafter, there are NO REFUNDS.

Q: What is your policy on NSF Checks

ANSWER: If we receive a check that does not have sufficient funds, the fee will be the amount owed plus the bank fee of $36.
